What is LEED?
LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a third party certification program and the internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings and communities. LEED is a point-based system that promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability and evaluates key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water effiency, energy & atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design, and regional priority. Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels of green building certification are awarded based on the total number of points earned. The LEED Rating System has been adopted nationwide by federal agencies, state and local governments, and interested private companies as the industry standard of measurement for green building.
About USGBC The LEED Rating System was developed by the The U.S. Green Building Council. USGBC is a 501c3 non-profit organization and the nation’s leading coalition of builders, corporations, universities, government agencies and nonprofit organizations working together to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. Since its founding in 1993, the council has grown to nearly 20,000 member companies and organizations and more than 100,000 LEED Accredited Professionals. LEED Consulting for New Projects The growth and interest in green building projects has spread rapidly. The LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintainance Rating System provides a performance-based benchmark for building owners and operators to measure operations, improvements and maintenance, with the goal of maximizing operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts. LEED for Existing Buildings addresses whole-building cleaning and maintenance issues (including chemical use), recycling programs, exterior maintenance programs, and systems upgrades.
