Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research

Burnham’s San Diego campus at 10900 N. Torrey Pines Road consists of 9 buildings, including a central mechanical building and a parking structure. Five of the nine buildings, comprising 89% of the total enclosed square footage, are laboratory buildings. The facilities were constructed in three stages beginning in 1975, added to in 1994, and completed during year 2000.

In 2008 Burnham decided to pursue LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance on their San Diego Campus. Within this Rating System projects are evaluated and certified by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). For evaluation, LEED uses six environmental categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation in Design. In December of 2009, the San Diego Campus achieved the Certified level within the LEED-EB Operations and Maintenance Rating System.

Vista Fire Station No. 6

The City of Vista Fire Station No. 6 is located at 651 E. Vista Way, between Escondido Ave and Franklin Lane. The site work provides preferred parking for low emitting and fuel efficient vehicles, reduces heat island effect, reduces stormwater runoff, and treats stormwater with bioswales and pervious concrete. High efficiency irrigation systems, drought tolerant plants, and low flow water fixtures helps save over 167,000 gallons of water annually. Low emitting and recycled content materials were specified and almost 80% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill. The 11,300 square foot station houses three drive-through apparatus bays, 9 bunk rooms, Training Room, Administrative offices, turnout lockers, laundry facilities, hose storage, and a workshop. Exterior site elements include an emergency generator, fueling facilities, and a hose-drying area.

1955 Bacon Street Remodel

The Ocean Beach Auto Repair Shop is a 54 year old building in the heart of the Ocean Beach community in San Diego, CA. Purchased by ARCHITECTS hanna gabriel wells in 2007, the space was designed and renovated around an open work environment that makes use of the service bays of the existing auto-repair shop to create a communal work space. Located just blocks from the ocean, shops and restaurants, the new building design is highly integrated to take full advantage of the coastal climate, sun’s energy, and subsequently, has achieved LEED Gold Certification.

Hotel Indigo

Located in the heart of San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District, Hotel Indigo is the first LEED Certified hotel in San Diego.

This 12 story boutique hotel features art from local artists reflecting the San Diego natural environment, including a dramatic glass sculpture arranged vertically in the Fibonacci sequence (Indigo Waters, Lisa Schirmer).

Features such as proximity to public transit, smoke free policy, discounts for driving a low-emitting vehicle, drought tolerant plants, high performance glazing, and a 3,800 sf of vegetated roof that provides herbs for the onsite restaurant Phi all helped Hotel Indigo achieve LEED Certification.

Partnered with the Humane Society, Hotel Indigo offers on-site adoptions and pet-themed parties; pets can stay free of charge.
