King-Chavez Health Center

The King-Chavez Health Center is located just 2.5 miles east of the San Diego Harbor in the National City area of San Diego, California. The building site is located at 950 South Euclid Avenue on the corner of Logan Street in the heart of the community, near a variety of schools, parks, shops and services.

The King-Chavez Health Center is a three story, 20,076 sf newly constructed building consisting of individual office space, multi-occupant work areas, a variety of medical and dental exam rooms, labs and information desks. Inside the building the project team expects a 31% water savings stemming from its low-flow water and flush fixtures that are provided for the anticipated 111 clients that visit the health center each day.

Outside of the building the team presumes to see a 60% reduction of potable water in its landscaping and irrigation design. Through the use of highly reflective roofing materials, energy efficient glazing and thermal comfort systems, and an economical lighting design, the energy use savings for the building is estimated to be 28% below the Title 24 default values, with an energy cost savings of 21%.

West Wireless Health Institute

The quest for sustainable buildings begins at the site selection stage, and although the West Wireless Health Institute (WWHI) is an interior renovation, its location provides several environmental benefits. WWHI has chosen 10350 North Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla, California as the San Diego base for its research to lower health care costs by accelerating the availability of wireless health solutions. The building is one of five that comprise the Torrey Pines Building complex. WWHI occupies the entire first, second and third floor of building 10350, and includes non-medical labs and offices that have been redesigned to aid the research activities of the facility.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® San Diego

The new Ronald McDonald House, located adjacent to Rady Children’s Hospital, creatively solves the problem of scarce and expensive land in San Diego’s hospital district.   The 65,000-square-foot House and exterior courtyards have been constructed on top of an existing six-story parking structure and feature 47 rooms for families with seriously ill children receiving treatment at the hospital.  By themselves, the new accommodations will be a major improvement over the existing House, which has only 12 rooms and has to turn away 100 families a month who need a place to stay while their children receive treatment at area hospitals.  All parties associated with the project saw the opportunity to further help the community by making the building LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified.

Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research

Burnham’s San Diego campus at 10900 N. Torrey Pines Road consists of 9 buildings, including a central mechanical building and a parking structure. Five of the nine buildings, comprising 89% of the total enclosed square footage, are laboratory buildings. The facilities were constructed in three stages beginning in 1975, added to in 1994, and completed during year 2000.

In 2008 Burnham decided to pursue LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance on their San Diego Campus. Within this Rating System projects are evaluated and certified by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). For evaluation, LEED uses six environmental categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation in Design. In December of 2009, the San Diego Campus achieved the Certified level within the LEED-EB Operations and Maintenance Rating System.
